Thank you, MBA class

January 30, 2008 – 2:15 am

I had the pleasure of being a guest speaker on Social Media Marketing for Dr. Meyer’s Professional Service Firm class here at UNCW. The format was that of an informal discussion, all the while moving toward a particular end point (the importance of listening and being involved in conversations online). The discussion was a blast. It was especially a joy for me as I was able to discuss and share what I am really passionate about (business) with a group of people wanting to participate.

The main topic revolved around conversations online, primarily having to do with blogging and its impact, but also branching off to explain other web properties (like del.icio.us or flickr) and how they housed similar components to this whole ‘conversation’ and ‘web 2.0′ thing. Thanks to David Armano as well for his fantastic design skills and skill in general when it comes to explaining more technical things in an easy to understand way. Dr. Meyer and I used his Touch Points graphic to bring a more visual representation to the discussion. His ripples graphic is also a great one. If you are looking for thought leaders, go subscribe to his blog if you haven’t already :)

What I really enjoyed, though, was the questions and involvement overall. All the questions that were asked were great. They are ones I am going to address on this blog and ones I am happy to have heard as it gives me a better understanding of the concerns that companies or other individuals may have. I especially liked the excitement by the end of class, as one of the students was volunteered by another to be an example for creating a blog (we used wordpress). Even though it was uncharted waters for him, he was willing to take the plunge into at least trying it out. As such, George now has a the beginnings of a blog, Costello’s Piano Bar.

All that said, I wanted to thank all those in the MBA class (and Dr. Meyer), including those that contacted me after  the class, thanking me or asking questions. If you have more questions, you’re more than welcome to continue e-mailing them my way.
