Social Media: A new tool to listen

December 12, 2007 – 1:49 am

I mentioned a site called MonitorThis about a month or so ago. I was pretty enthralled by the site since it pulled in data from so many places and exported it to an OPML file (a file you can import into an RSS reader like Bloglines or Google Reader). The issue, however, was for each site it tracked was a new feed you had to organize. So Yahoo, Google Blog Search, Ice Rocket, Technorati, all of them were their own feeds. This is a complete pain in the ass to me since I use Google Reader and organize my feed by labels (meaning I basically have to label 20 or so feeds).

So I decided to play around with Yahoo! Pipes and put together my own tool that listens to various sites. The nice thing is that it creates one RSS feed and you can subscribe to it versus having a large number of feeds you have to import.

I’m still working on it here and there, so if there is a site you’d like to see, or some sort of addition, let me know and I’ll see if I can’t do it :)

Current sites it listens for keywords on are: BoardTracker, Yahoo! Search, Technorati, Google Blog Search, Ice Rocket, Del.icio.us Popular, Topix, and Bloglines Blog Search.

The tool can be found here.
