I came across some data that fits quite well in with my recent post on how “lazy isn’t a business model” that addresses the fascination of the seemingly easy money that can be made by “simply” advertising. Below shows some data via Reuters that display some pretty sobering numbers (in the event that you were perhaps not sober when considering the numbers initially, I suppose) for those who are considering online advertising as a revenue model.

To take a semi-optimistic side (which I realize is an odd and surprising turn given the course of the initial cynicism of the first article, but hey, I like surprises, hopefully you do, too!), the size of the online advertising pie is quite large which means even given the data below, you may still make some cash. It just may not be a lot.

The top 50 Web sites accounted for more than 90% of the revenue from online advertising spending in the first half of the year, and the top 10 sites accounted for 70%, according to the IAB/PwC data.

True….but what about the guy that sold a million advertising spaces on his web site for one dollar a piece. He made a million…right? I know, it’s ridiculous but I find it funny: http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/

Advertising is most certainly not a reliable source of income especially when your business is first starting up.

I have read about and seen the million dollar homepage. I agree entirely, it’s quite ridiculous, but also quite clever.

It reminds me of the story about a guy who purchased a premium case of cigars and insured them against fire. Then he smoked them and filed his claim with the company. Complete idiocy but somewhat brilliant. Except that the insurance company then filed a claim against him for arson.

I would consider the million dollar homepage one of the more creative ways needed when going about online advertising. The thing about creative methods, though, is that you always need to be looking at how to evolve your method (that applies not just to advertising).

      Thanks for commenting, Tim :)

Truthfully, what I find the most interesting is the amount of traffic is generated to this site and how much of it is repeat visits.
