Facebook Application: Face The Dare
September 27, 2007 – 1:09 pmI worked on a social network idea last year that was based on the game of dare. A few months back I changed the idea significantly from what it was, and fit it into what was the new trend at the time- Facebook Applications (which still in a way is the new trend).
I figured since I am about open ideas, here it is. To put the entire thing up would take too much space, but here’s how the functionality would work.
Face the Dare is a game that involves groups of friends (or individuals) and gives them the means to challenge each other to do various tasks.
In FTD, there are public dares and private dares.
Public dares count as points toward the leader board, are open for anyone to do, and last one week. Anyone can add and complete a public dare. At the end of one week, out of all the dares (in video format) posted for that dare, the best is chosen for first place and is awarded points, as are 2nd and 3rd.
Private dares are simply dares between friends that don’t earn points toward the leaderboard. This is to ensure a consistency of points. You can dare anyone who is your friend with a private dare and see the result.
The number of points for a public dare is determined by voting. People enter in whatever public dare they want (For example: “Run through a mall in chainmail”), then others vote on how much they think it should be worth. The scale I was going to start with was going to be a non-quantifiable scale. The points it can be worth were “Little”, “Some”, or “A lot”. Each has a number value assigned to it, and based on the average between those votes, the actual number of points is determined. (Points are between 1 and 100). The list of dares is based entirely on the number of dares users add.
The reason for a non-quantifiable scale was to make the point attribution process simple and quick. There is much less thought involved with “That sounds hilarious, that’s worth a lot.” It just flows compared to “That sounds hilarious, that’s worth… uhm, 7? Or maybe 8? But what else did I say was 8?”
When someone gets first place on a public dare, it is added to their profile as if it were a kind of award.
